This position will be able to meet all the core competencies set forth by the Child Life Council and use these competencies as a guide for his/her practice. This position assesses the emotional, developmental, educational and diversionary needs of hospitalized children and coordinates the therapeutic interventions to address the medical, procedural, surgical and diagnostic experiences of patients and families. Plans and implements programs and services to meet the needs identified for assigned clinical populations and the child life department. Promotes and practices the delivery of high quality family-centered care and services for patients and families. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Child Life, Psychology or related field, Child Life Certification, and obtaining Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire. Preferred qualifications include a Master’s degree and professional child life experience in a hospital environment. Core duties include preparing individualized therapeutic care plans, applying child life interventions, preparing patients for medical experiences, accompanying children to procedures, facilitating playroom programming, coordinating normalization activities, educating patients and families, advocating for parents, participating in research and outreach, providing training and consultation, and collaborating with healthcare teams. Physical requirements include heavy work, working with others, irregular hours, exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases, and working with electrical hazards. Skills required include implementing therapeutic play, assessing patient behavior, knowledge of child development and coping mechanisms, organizational skills, ability to work independently, and basic computer skills. Scheduled weekly hours are 40, and the position is exempt/non-exempt in the United States of America.
